Diapers

Even though we had no expectation (or even necessarily desire) of becoming pregnant, I'd read people's blog posts about cloth diapering with interest.  (I'm weird like that.)  So, when we found out we were pregnant, I decided we were going to cloth diaper.  Steven wasn't too on board with that until we signed up for a registry at Babies R Us.  When the clerk helping us spouted the statistic that babies go through approximately 3000 diapers in the first year, Steven saw the wisdom of cloth.

Whenever I mentioned to people that I planned to use cloth, I received a lot of negativity.  A few friends were supportive, but most people seemed appalled.  My youth group acted thoroughly grossed out.  (What does that say about a generation that has been brought up with everything, including electronics, being basically disposable?)  People seriously think using cloth is crazy.  I don't get it.  What's the big deal about washing diapers, especially seeing as I love doing laundry?

I chose a couple of different all-in-one diapers, and we're all set to use them.  Just one problem: Alex isn't big enough yet!

He needs to gain a little more weight and get fatter legs!

It was painful to drop several hundred dollars at one time on diapers, but now that's looking downright cheap, seeing as the cloth diapers will last until potty training.  In his first 5.5 weeks of life, I think we've spent nearly $100 on disposables!  Now that's crazy!

Awwww! That's so cute :) I'm glad you're braving the world of cloth diapering. I've been cloth diapering my son since he was about 3 weeks old and I LOVE it!

I do use disposables overnight since he sleeps 10-12 hours a night (he's 15 months old now). Still, I know I'm saving a ton of money!

Congrats to you! We are also a cloth diapering family (use one size Happy Heinys and a few one size Bum Genius along with Kissaluv 0s for the first two months) and love it! At about a year or so we have to switch to a disposable over night, but other than that it is cloth all the way.

A good male friend said to my MIL that we wouldn't last 30 days so considering it has been 3 1/2 years we are doing good :) Our Little Guy used them until he was potty trained (completely over night and everything before age 3) and our Peanut is in them now. Soon Baby 3 will be joining the parade too! It is worth it financially, environmentally, and just to not have to ever worry about running to get diapers because baby is in the last one and it is 6 o'clock and dinner is cooking and life is crazy!

Any questions about them just ask. We have many people who have helped us with the journey and try and pass on what we've learned when it helps others!

Enjoy your little guy,
Heather

I used cloth diapers on my sons. I tried to use disposable diapers more than 37 years ago. My son had alergic reactions to the diapers. I went to cloth diapers (this was back in the day when we had to use plastic pants and diaper pins.) and never had a problem. I washed diapers every day. I only had 24 diapers. I never had a problem. When son #2 came along 4 years later I never tried disposable again. The cloth diapers were still good.
Your son is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing the pictures.

Ah, cloth diapers. I've thought about it every time, and always end up buying . . . disposables. And not generics, either. I'm partial to Pampers when they're newborns, and then switch to Huggies.

I love love love disposables because we do not have a dryer. I would probably kill myself in the winter if I had to try to dry out cloth diapers as well... the regular laundry goes mouldy as it is when it doesn't quite get dry enough quick enough. I guess climate plays a large role in the decision. That and the washing machine wash is not truly hot enough for me to be happy with cloth, so I know I'd end up boiling them as well! In all my spare time, hah. So glad they work for you! I think a lot of the negativity is also left over from when you had cloth and a rubber pants cover, and they inevitably leaked. The clever velcro contraptions are not what they had back in the day.
