Clearing Out

Oh my.  I posted about needing the nesting instinct to kick in so that I can clean out the mess of a guest room in order to make it into the baby's room.  Well, that instinct has not kicked in.  But determination has.  My husband is out of town this week at youth camp, and I'm home alone, so it seemed a good time to just dive in and begin to tackle the wreck.

This is a highly-involved process, I think.  Our house isn't terribly big, I'll have to clean out several closets in order to make room for the things that are currently occupying the guest room/closet, and I'll need to create space for all the new baby things that will be coming in soon.  I'm already overwhelmed.

Going through the closet in the soon-to-be-baby's room, I found things like this:

Time to suck it up and just toss the old high school drill team uniform in the giveaway pile.  Not really sure why I still have it.  It's not as if I still fit into it, and even if I did, why on earth would I wear it?

This is trickier, though:

After my wedding, my mother had my wedding dress cleaned and heirloom-boxed for me.  It's a wonderful thing.  But it's big.  Really big.  I have no idea where to put this now!  There is literally no room in any of our other closets for something this large, and the attic is out of the question.  This is Texas, and the temps up there would destroy my beautiful dress.  We're having a son, so you might wonder why I don't just get rid of it.  Well, I have four nieces.  I can't help but think that one of them might want to wear my dress someday.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to be ruthless in getting rid of other things in order to make room for what's most important to me.  Have I mentioned that I'm overwhelmed?!

You don't know me, but I say keep the wedding dress. Yes, it's huge, but you never know what the future might bring. My first child was a boy and I had a lot of trouble conceiving after that and prety much gave up on the idea of ever having a daughter to pass my girly stuff to. But through the wonder of God and the amazing knowledge He gave to my doctor, my beautiful baby girl was born 4 months ago. So you just never know. Surprises happen every day. My mom saved her wedding dress and over 40 years later I wore it at my wedding. It made the day even more special and it is something I will always remember and hold in my heart. So keep the dress. :)

I am Roxie in Texas. I know how hot and humid it gets.

Keep the dress. You never know what might happen.

What about slipping the box under a bed? With a bed skirt on the bed the box would not show. Even under the crib; with a skirt on the crib it would not show.

Take care of yourself and do not wear yourself out too much.

See if you can find a pre school or day care to take the pep squad uniform. That would be great fun in a dress up box.

Oh, the dress is definitely staying! I'm just lost on where it will go. It's too big to fit under a bed, unfortunately. And frankly, our bed already has stuff shoved under it! *sigh* I think we just have too much stuff.

I did buy some space bags today. Hopefully, they actually work and aren't just a gimmicky TV sell. If they actually work, they'll be great, as I have several pillows and a down comforter in need of a new space in my house. That will free up room elsewhere.

I kept mine in hopes that someday it could actually be cut up and made into a baptismal outfit for our child. Hope we will someday have a child to baptize.

I'm not sure why people hang onto their dresses. They aren't going to wear them again and, really, what are the chances that their daughters would want to wear that dress. It just seems so impractical to me.
I think the idea of making something out of the dress is AWESOME! A baptismal outfit, taking the fabric and adding it as a mat to a framed wedding photo or maybe a incorporating the fabric into an heirloom quilt seem like a great way to repurpose a dress that will just sit around in a box.
