Homemade fleece cat

My youngest niece is about to turn 4, and I decided to make her a kitty cat for Christmas. My sewing skills are pretty undeveloped, but I figured I could manage this project. And I was pleased to find out that I was right!

I think it turned out quite well. I bought this book a year or two ago at Half-Price Books for less than $5. It has tons of animal-related craft projects in it, and I got the pattern for the cat out of it. I have plenty of fleece leftover, so after Christmas, I'm thinking that I may make some more cats as baby gifts (but I'll replace the button eyes with fabric). This wound up being a fairly easy and fun thing to make. I just hope she likes it!

Very cute!

I'd say your sewing skills are better than rudimentary. It's not all that easy to make some of those tight curves without making the fabric pucker!

Thanks!

Well, I learned a major lesson through this. I should have sewn the head and patch on the body BEFORE sewing the body together. Trying to do it with my hand inside the body was a quite the challenge. And I taught myself to do the patch and nose with a blanket stitch. I have an ancient (as in, older than me) BHG Sewing Book that I bought at a thrift store, and it has pictures and basic instructions that even I can follow.

Now that I've made one, I think any future kitties will be pretty easy. Gotta learn through mistakes and experience.

That looks great! And you say your sewing skills are not great. I wish mine were as bad as yours. I could be really good.

that is awesome! i tried sewing a stuffed animal dog in 8th grade home ec. (I don't think they call it home ec. anymore, sorry for the political incorrectedness...I don't know what it's called these days). I managed to sew the hind legs on backwards. The dog was supposed to be in a sitting position, but it didn't work out very well with its legs sewed on backwards!

I LOVE Half-Price Books. I never did find one here, I wonder if there is one where we are moving to.
