Dental distress

I hate going to the dentist. My sister and I had a horrible dentist as children, and as a result, I've been terrified of dental visits ever since. To make things worse, I have terrible teeth thanks to genetics. While I no longer seem to get cavities, I do have old fillings that are breaking down, so my fear of the dentist is now more of a fear of the dental bills I'll have to incur for crowns. Ouch!

So, um, I've avoided going for about a year-and-a-half because my last visit wound up costing me $1700 for 3 crowns. (Please don't lecture me about this, Mama!) I'm just not ready for that again.

But I discovered last night that I've chipped a tooth. It's one of those teeth with old fillings, so I guess this was bound to happen, but it means I can't put off going any longer.

I'm now scheduled for 9:10am on Thursday. Sweaty palms, queasy stomach, fast breathing await me that morning. Perhaps I should re-read The Hiding Place before I go, because that book is what got me through those 3 crowns last time. I kept telling myself, "If Corrie Ten Boom could survive Ravensbrook, I can survive the dentist." Probably a poor comparison, but that just goes to show you how scared I am of dental work!

Wish me luck!

(((ewok))) Good luck!

I know that many dentists are much more pain conscious than they used to be--if the one you go to tomorrow is not conscious of your apprehension and pain issues, you should look into finding another one who is. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be, going to the dentist. IMHO.

sounds like my teeth! Christmas Day I also chipped a tooth (previously filled!). I went to the dentist on New Years Eve Day and he said it didn't require a crown - he could do a filling to fix it.

Well here it is a couple weeks later and I have not made the appointment. I dread it - though I don't think the filling will be too bad - just don't like going. sigh

Thankfully, I do like my dentist, so I'm really not worried about that. I think it's just the environment, the sounds, the smells, and the fact that it takes something like a million shots to actually get me numb, then they have to work fast because Novacaine wears off on me very quickly.

Edi, I can only hope that mine will be as simple as that! Your comment gives me a little hope.

So I got your comment "Sounds like something my cats would do!" just after I posted about my son opening a box of flash cards and all I could think of was how stupid my cat must be compared to yours. And here I thought she was just lazy!

Then I went to reply and realized that it was actually in response to my cat jumping into my bowl of cream of wheat. Your comment made _SOOOO_ much more sense then!

Anyway...best wishes at the dentist! I won't tell you my wisdom teeth horror stories! Fortunately, my teeth have done pretty well with their 'semi-decade-al' vsits. Once the little man gets big enough, I might start piggybacking my visits with his. Maybe.

Ouch, you poor thing. Hope you will be ok. My teeth are very bad too-genetics as well. This time when I went home I ate sweets like a 5 yr old and i suffered from toothache so much. Biting some cloves help and so does salt water rinsing. Anyway I hate dentist trips too, that is another thing we have in common although I have to say I haven't so far met anyone who LOVES to go to the dentist. :D
