Goodwill

I'm always amazed by the remarkable bargains Meredith finds while thrift shopping, so every once in a while, I'll head into a thrift store to have a look. A Goodwill store opened up last month a couple of miles from my house, so I decided to check it out.

Steven gave me a new record player for my birthday, so I flipped through the records at the store. There wasn't anything good, but I did do a double take on this one:

You see, I was a member of that choir back in high school. Obviously not that choir, as I wasn't even born yet judging by the outfits you can see in the closeup, but the youth choir of the same name at that same church, just about 20 years later. I had no idea they used to make records and play their own instruments. All we did was sing and occasionally do little bits of acting. (My era was the time of youth-group musicals. Very big in the 80s.) It was just kind of fun to see that record and have a bit of a connection.

What I did wind up buying was 2 baskets that I'll use for craft-room organization (after I clean them up a bit), and 4 hardcover books, 3 of which are full of animal stories (my personal kryptonite--I'm a total sucker for animal stories). All of this cost only $5.57! I was pretty pleased by the cheapness of it all.

Ewokgirl,

So glad you're joining the fun of thrifting. I'm sure you'll have many cheap treasures to share.

I thought of you when we drove past the local IHOP on the 25th--hope you had a great day!

Thrifting is the best! My very best score was my round chairs--I got them for $5 each at Thrift Town in the Mission in San Francisco back in '85. I've had them recovered twice since then, though, so they have cost me considerably more than that!

There's a great book out (don't know if it's still in print, but I'm sure you could find one used if not) called Thrift Score by Al Hoff. It is a hoot, and full of great ideas and advice.

Carrie, you're such a sweetie! I did have fun, and I'll be sure to try these places more often.

Cathy, I think you've mentioned that book to me before. Naturally, my library doesn't have it. :-( Typical. I'll keep an eye out for it, though. Sounds like something I'd really enjoy.

Garage sale-ing is fun too! Unless I have to take the kids with me, then it's not fun. They want to buy every toy they see haha!
